A Systematic Literature Review on Agile Coaching and the Role of the Agile Coach

Researcher/Institution name:: Viktoria Stray, Bakhtawar Memon, Lucas Paruch - Department of Informatics, University of Oslo, Norway; SINTEF, Trondheim, Norway.

Research Summary

This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) on the role of the agile coach. Despite the popularity of the job title, empirical knowledge regarding the tasks, responsibilities, and skills required is lacking. Based on 67 selected studies, the findings suggest that agile coaching facilitates the adoption and sustainability of agile methods. Agile coaches are instrumental in training teams, supporting stakeholders, addressing resistance to change, and removing barriers to team autonomy. Key skills identified include leadership qualities, project management, technical expertise, and deep knowledge of agile methods.

Research Question

  1. What are the tasks and responsibilities of an agile coach?
  2. What are the skills required of an agile coach?

Relevance to Coaching

The study clarifies the role of agile coaches in software development organizations. It highlights their function as change agents who guide organizations through cultural transitions. It provides a framework for coaches to understand their core duties, ranging from technical instruction to organizational change management.

Significance and Innovation

This is the first comprehensive academic systematic review of agile coaching. It bridges the gap between practitioner-based literature and academic research, providing a clear definition of the required competencies and responsibilities for effective agile coaching.

Method and Data

The authors performed a systematic literature review (SLR) using the Scopus database. After applying strict inclusion and exclusion criteria to an initial search result of 209 studies, 67 studies were selected. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to extract common themes regarding tasks and skills.

Main Findings

The review identified eight key task themes, such as training teams, supporting stakeholders, and removing bottlenecks. It further categorized required skills into four main areas: leadership, project management, agile expertise, and technical skills. The results emphasize the coach’s critical role in managing organizational resistance and fostering self-organizing teams.
